Just some general information

I found the initial experience of applying to medicine quite overwhelming, and had no idea how competitive the application process really is.  So, here are my comments and opinions on the process.  First of all, to be brutally honest, the chances of anyone getting into medical school are slim, it is definitely a long shot.  Most schools ( in Canada ) have about 95 spots ( I am averaging here ), and about 1300 applicants.  Keeping in mind that few unsuitable applicants would waste their time and money applying, you are in for some really tough competition.  The good news is that somebody has to fill those spots, the trick is to make them choose you.

How will I stand out?

What follows is a comprehensive list of what a successful applicant might look like.  Remember, these are only my opinions, but I think they are valid.  This list covers  the more literal requirements, and some of the more subjective ones as well:

1.  Grades -this is the big one, most successful applicants have 3.6 (85% / A-) or greater on the 4.0 point scale .  I would say if you are down below a 3.3 (80% / B+), you may wish to hold off on applying until you can post some higher averages.

2.  Prerequisites - every school has a list of courses that you must have in order to be considered.  Each school is different, so make sure you have them covered before you drop $100 to apply.

3.  Reference Letters - most schools require 2-3 letters, so get to know your professors well.  Letters from faculty and MD's are the way to go for sure.

4.  MCAT - a good showing on this exam is very important when applying to many schools in Canada and the United States.  Go to the MCAT information page.

5.  Essays - application packages will ask you to write essays for the selection committees.  Spend some time on these, they really do use them.

6.  Personal Qualities - you will most likely be a well rounded individual with a wide variety of interests and experiences.  This is where things like volunteer experience and extra-curricular activities come into play.

7.  Multiple Applications - I don't know if this is official policy, or just happenstance.  But the fact is that many people are accepted on their second or third try by schools that initially rejected them.

8.  Attitude - Be courteous and patient in all verbal and written communication with the schools; you never know who is on the other end of the phone, or what kind of clout they have with the selection committee.

9.  Money - The average application (once you consider transcripts, courier etc.) costs $150 - $170 cdn.  Plus, if you are invited to interview anywhere, you must transport yourself to the school.  So, be aware of the cost.
